What are Speech Sound Disorders (SSD)?
SSD is an umbrella term referring to any difficulty or combination of difficulties with perception, motor production, or phonological representation of speech sounds and speech segments (ASHA).
Examples of functional speech problems:
- Omissions/ deletions - ex.: "cu" for "cup"
- Substitutions - ex.: "thing" for "sing"
- Additions - ex.: "buhlack" for "black"
- Distortions - ex.: altered or distorted "s" sound
- Syllable-level errors: "tephone" for "telephone"
